Advisory Teaching Service: Supporting Parents, Encouraging Students

At Calvert, we believe strongly that each parent is capable of teaching their child through homeschooling. But life will change when you become a homeschool parent.

As a homeschooler, you will take on the duties and responsibilities of both a teacher and education administrator. You will need to implement lessons, organize field trips, coordinate activities with other parents, and make sure you are compliant with state and local homeschool requirements.

When helping parents decide if homeschooling is the right choice for their family, we suggest they identify people who can be part of their support network. However, sometimes a local or regional support group is not enough. First-time homeschooling parents often need additional help with teaching to ensure their lessons are going well.

This is why we created our Advisory Teaching Service program (ATS).

Here is how the Advisory Teaching Service (ATS) works:

  1. A family enrolls in the Calvert Advisory Teaching Service program.
  2. Students in grades 4 and above take a placement test to determine knowledge level and identify potential learning styles.
  3. Based on the placement results, Calvert enrolls the student in the appropriate grade-level curriculum and assigns an Advisory Teacher.
  4. The parent teaches lessons and assigns daily activities and practice. As the student progresses to assessments and projects, completed work is periodically uploaded for the Advisory Teacher’s review. The teacher grades each assessment and project and provides detailed feedback, including corrections, and recommendations for improvement or enrichment.
  5. The Advisory Teacher also motivates and encourages the student and parent to help both get the most out of the curriculum and the homeschooling experience.
  6. A teacher is there through completion of the student’s course.
  7. Once the coursework has ended, the Advisory Teacher provides a certificate of completion as well as a transcript (available upon request), which may help fulfill your state’s reporting requirement.

At Calvert, we want to help you become your child’s best possible teacher. The Advisory Teaching Services program is just another way to make that easier.
