Calvert’s Verticy ELA course uses research-based instruction techniques to help students learn by looking, listening, speaking, touching and moving. Verticy’s 5th Grade program includes one complete English Language Arts course comprised of 3 components: Phonics and Spelling, Grammar and Composition, and Literature.
The Verticy English Language Arts course includes everything you need to help your child become a more confident reader and writer:
For students who can identify consonants, short and long vowels, and have had exposure to vowel teams, suffixes and beginning spelling rules.
Your child will focus on building solid reading skills,
reviewing syllable types, blends, slides, consonant diagraphs, and basic vowel teams.
Spelling concepts introduced include: frequency, order of spelling, common usages and new sounds. Students will also begin learning about exceptions to spelling rules.
For students who can write basic compositions or paragraphs.
Students will review the foundations of composition including topic and concluding sentences. They will practice writing through letter-writing, complex sentences and work their way up to creating multi-paragraph compositions.
Students will also learn about note-taking strategies to gain advanced writing skills.
Grammar study will focus on reviewing grammar basics and practice such as: proper and common nouns, subject/predicate, complex sentences, prepositions and phrases and labeling parts of speech.
Literature lessons are designed to increase comprehension, appreciation and analysis.
