Meet the Calvert Education Counselors: Martha Cole

Calvert’s Education Counselors can be one of the best and most amazing things about a Calvert experience. Yet often I find when I talk to families that they are not accessing this tremendous resource we provide. So, with their hearty agreement, the education counselors are helping us get to know them better. Here is the first in our series of Education Counselor Insights, Martha Cole.

Martha Cole

“Born and raised in Baltimore County, Maryland. I enjoyed years of blissful Saturdays partaking in art lessons at the Baltimore Museum of Art. (Sketching mummies was my favorite!)”

“I attribute my grammar-geek status to the nuns at St. Mary’s where I spent my formative years. A married mom of two adult children, nothing makes me happier than waterside camping in Maine and Chesapeake Bay adventures. (My husband and kids totally agree!)”

What was your favorite book as a child? Why?
If Everybody Did by Jo Ann Stover. I have my original childhood edition. The ridiculously exaggerated illustrations are such a hoot. Even reading it today makes me laugh.

What is your favorite part about being an Education Counselor?
Creative problem solving that gives tools to children and parents.

If you weren’t a teacher, what job would you like to have?
Mermaid! I always told my parents I wanted to be a mermaid. But seeing as all those jobs had been taken, I think I might have developed my own web-based resource: AskMarthaFirst offering creative insight and solutions. I am creative and opinionated, so it might have worked!

As an Education Counselor, students often learn from you. Do you ever learn from students?
As adults, our heads are so overflowing with detritus that it can derail clear thinking. Children’s heads are less cluttered so they will share a way to look at a problem that is far more straightforward!

What’s your favorite kind of phone call to get from a parent or student?
“I’m just calling to tell you that I tried what you suggested and it worked! Thank you!”

What question do you get asked the most often?
“Can you help me with math?” comes up a lot!
